My understanding was that the data files are installed automatically by including the ‘-DGEANT_INSTALL_DATA’ option. Can any one please tell why Geant4 provides additional links to download the data files (geant4.web.cern.ch) and how we are supposed to use them?

Some sites may not want to redownload the data for each individual build (the GEANT4_INSTALL_DATADIR option also helps with this).
Some sites may want to download the data files separately, using a dedicated high-volume data transfer method.
