Introducing a gold coating

Hello,
I want to introduce a gold coating to my logical volume with a thickness of a few nm which covers my whole logical volume. Now my question is if there is a better way than creating a slightly larger structure and subtracting the original one which caused me a few problems so far. As far as I know LogicalBorderSurface and so on only work for photons so I wanted to ask if there is a similar solution for my case.
Thanks for your help and I will give more information if necessary.

The subtraction is not necessary, just define the original volumes as daughter volumes of the larger structure.
