Dear Geant4 Community,
I am currently running simulations of a Faraday cup, where I want to check the influence of the electric field generated by a charged guard ring on the charge collection efficiency. I am simulating the interaction of 70 and 150 MeV clinical proton beams with the detector, and scoring the collected charge in the cup with respect to the incident charge.
To adequately model surface emission, I have applied the MicroElec physics list on 10nm thick volumes corresponding to the metallic surfaces of the detector. Range cuts have been fixed to 1nm and the low edge for production to 0.1 eV. The lowest electron energy is set to 0 eV.
The following plot showcases my results so far:
As shown, in the range [-100 V, 100 V], the simulation matches pretty well with the measurements. However, for lower or higher field settings, there is a mismatch. In particular, for negative potentials the higher signal simulated suggest that there is some missing excess negative charge in the absorber, and the difference for positive potentials suggest that not enough negative charge is being removed from the absorber (due to backscattering).
I attach below the TOPAS parameter file I am using to run one of these simulations (note that some implementations, such as the microelec physics list and mapped electric fields, are custom and not included in TOPAS release versions).
Do you have any suggestion on how to enhance secondary emission to better match the measurements, if that is the problem?
